The most interesting display in the gallery opening last week, for me at least, was the peanut butter and jelly sandwich eating video. It was like seeing a car accident on the shoulder of a highway or passing by a homeless person on a New York City street - somewhat horrifying, but you can't stop looking at it. I wish I had brought some kind of pen and paper with me so that I could write down the artist's name and look at some of his other work, but unfortunately, I didn't think that far ahead.
I can't imagine what kind of artistic or metaphorical meaning this piece could have been aiming for, but nevertheless, it was enthralling and eye catching. I kept catching myself staring at the screen while people were talking, watching each person devour and then regurgitate the PB&J. How gross, but what an awesome observation of human behavior.
